The Wedding

The wedding had a cowboy theme to it (this was Cowboy Jared from PBS' Texas Ranch House getting married after all), so we wanted Skyler to wear cowboy boots and a bolo tie. Well the cowboy boots didn't fly at all, he totally freaked out when we had him even try some on, but Jordan made him a bolo tie with an 's' on it (his favorite letter) and he, under much pressure from me, at least wore it in the family photo. There is one picture that's not really a great one, but it's the only one I got of him with the bolo tie on. Jared and Annie have a dog named Myrtle. Skyler loved Myrtle and followed her around anytime we were at their house. Myrtle was part of the ceremony and after she ran down the aisle, Skyler tried to go after her.

Skyler and Jane Sept 2006, the day we left Pennsylvania

Texas

We spent the weekend in Texas for Jordan's brother's wedding. On Friday morning, we were able to spend some time with some friends from Pennsylvania who have since moved to Texas. They live on a farm, and here are some pictures of Skyler with his friend Jane. It took awhile for Skyler to warm up to the cows (he never warmed up to the chickens) but then he had a fun time feeding them. Skyler and Jane were such good friends when they lived near each other, it was so great to see them together again.

We colored Easter Eggs on Saturday night. I don't know who enjoyed it more - Skyler or Jordan.

Grandma and Grandpa's House

Last night, Skyler and I flew to Arizona to visit my family. Skyler was acting weird yesterday, due to anxiety or nervousness or excitment, I don't know (probably a little bit of everything), but the flight went well. An hour long flight is good, I can deal with him on the plane for an hour without loosing my mind. He seemed to just really like being on a plane, and I hope the novelty hasn't worn off by the time we fly home.

My parents are having their bathroom redone and one of the guys doing it is named Steve. When he came in and Skyler was introduced to him, Skyler calls out "Steve goes to college!". Now he's determined to go and find him (in between watching Curious George and playing with trains). I fear it's because he wants to ask him where Blue is and then go off with him to find clues.

Skyler's First Trip to the Theater
March 28, 2007

On Monday, we took Skyler to see his first movie in a theater. We saw Charlotte's Web. He did pretty good. For the first half at least he just sat on Jordan's lap mesmerized by the big screen no doubt. I watched him and tried to think what it might be like to see a screen that large for the first time. Jordan says having Skyler on his lap for so long was better than the movie. Then, Skyler made a few trips to the bathroom, sat with me for awhile and in his own seat too. I'd say it was a success, though I won't be rushing to take him to any movie that costs more than $1 to get in and might be more than half full. It was nice being in a not very full theater and knowing I didn't break the bank to get us all in.

Planting seeds in the garden

The favorite shirt and another two

Here's Skyler in his favorite shirt mentioned in an earlier post. And then just a cute one of him watching TV holding a favorite stuffed animal. And the last one is him all ready to go to Spencer's house for the evening. You can't tell because it's dark (we were out the door, and I didn't bother to turn any lights on to take this picture), but he's pulling his backpack. He's got his Mardi Gras beads on, which he is seldom without (Jordan got them from a parts supplier located in where else? New Orleans) and a hat of Jordan's. Since Dad had a hat on, he needed one too.

Oakey's Time Out

Skyler just gave one of his stuffed animals time out. Apparently Oakey was taking a bath (on Skyler's desk) and got out. Skyler put Oakey on the table and told him he was in time out for getting out of the bath and was in trouble. Then Skyler looked at me and said, "Oakey's in time out, don't hold him".
So yes, Skyler gets time out from time to time, but I've never given him time out for anything bath related, so I'm not sure where that came from.

Outside
March 06, 2007

Jordan has been doing a lot of work in the backyard now that it isn't quite so cold and Skyler loves to join him. It took some convincing to get Skyler to understand that we were planting raspberries the other day and not sticks and therefore he should not pull them up. Now as much as Skyler likes to go outside, he sometimes doesn't get to because his new favorite game is running away. I'm not going to chase him around the house and pin him down just to put shoes on him so he can do something he wants to do. He misses out sometimes but doesn't quite understand the connection between cooperating with me and getting to do what he wants to do. Though sometimes it seems like he wants to just run away from me and the fun of that game quickly makes him forget what he wanted to do in the first place.

In other news, I've decided that it's necessary to completely purge Skyler's closet of all things 2T, and graduate to the world of 3T, well except for a few pairs of pants that still fit him (clothes from the Children's Place apparently run large). This means shopping. We were at the mall on Friday with some friends and she was pulling shirts off the rack and asking her son if he liked them or not. Good idea, I decide, since Skyler is quite picky about what clothes he'll wear. So we picked out a few shirts and he insisted on wearing one for three days in a row. Perhaps I should go back to the store and pick up a backup shirt. I was going to post a picture of him in his beloved shirt, but the computer isn't cooperating. Another time.

There must be something new

I feel like I need to post something, just not sure what, though. Skyler enjoyed Valentine's Day. He loved saying "Happy Valentine's Day" to everyone and he liked making Valentines. Daddy got the day off because of snow and a nice boss, so we all made cookies, and Skyler is a particularly good sprinkler of cookies (he's not so bad at eating them either). Skyler is way into Blue's Clues right now. For those of you not in the "know", Blue and Steve/Joe (depends if you're watching an old or new episode) will "skidoo" into books or pictures. We do lots of skidooing in our house. But we must skidoo over something. The changeover from carpet to tile is sufficient, but Skyler prefers to make a line out of shoes or toys or whatever is handy for us to skidoo over. We'll sing the little ditty (Blue skidooed we can too) make the skidooing noise, (which sounds like a whoooo) roll our hands around and jump over the designated line. Fun times. Skyler also has his own handy dandy notebook and is also constantly on the look out for clues. Jordan's high school mascot was the Bulldog, and there are many of his cross country and track shirts on the T-shirt quilt on our bed (the ABC blanket, if you will) and well, they have paw prints on them. Lots of clues to be found on our bed. And as luck would have it, Jordan still has one of his high school shirts that he wears from time to time. A blue shirt with a big paw print on it - daddy's Blue's Clues shirt.
Skyler loves to play out back in the dirt, but still won't go near the snow. Claims it's slippery, well it can be, but how does he know? Did he have some horrible falling in the snow incident that scarred him and traumatized me and Jordan so much that we can't remember it? Skyler also enjoys watching Charlotte's Web, which he calls the "McDonald Show" and I think he used to call it the doggy show because apparently didn't realize Wilbur was a pig. But at least he's quit calling Templeton "Jumpy Squirrel". He's mellowed in the sense that he doesn't need me around him all time. Or maybe not. He's into throwing tantrums now, so if he gets mad at me for whatever reason he'll just stay where he is and freak out as opposed to following me around and hanging and tugging at me. Whatever, it gives me a chance to throw some laundry in or go to the bathroom alone. He's in a twin bed now, which is going well. He doesn't (yet) get out of bed at bedtime. At naptime he does, but he stays in his room and plays and it's not like he was sleeping when he was still in his crib.
Looks like I found some things to type.:)

Now I know my ABCs
February 09, 2007

Skyler loves anything with letters. He has some alphabet flashcards and loves to look through them for letters he knows and ask me "what starts with (the picture on the card)" He can 100% recognize the letter 's' and loves to look for it on T-shirts and in books. He calls any shirt with any letters on it at all an "ABC shirt". He's hit or miss with recognizing 'c', 'k', and 'o' and a few others I can't think of right now.

Go Team!

Last night, Skyler went to his first basketball game. It was the UNM Lobos vs. the BYU Cougars. I'm not quite sure which Jordan and I enjoyed more, cheering for the Lobos or cheering against the Cougars. ;). But, regardless, Skyler had such a fun time. It was a late game, but he did a great job. Our friends the Olsens went to and Skyler had fun sitting next to Gabe and cheering along with everyone else. I've been to many, many basketball games, but this was by far the most fun. I just loved watching Skyler take it all in. Here he is all ready for the game (and a bit distracted by the bag of candy).

Bye Bye Crib

Two days ago Skyler climbed out of his crib. I put him in at naptime and went downstairs to get his drink, when I got back up, he was sitting in the chair with a big grin on his face. A grin that said, 'that's a fun game, mom, wanna put me back in my crib so I can climb out again?'. The next day at naptime he requested to take a nap on the big pillow on the floor in his room. I let him and covered him with a blanket and gave him some stuffed animals. Ten minutes later, I heard him saying he needed to go to the bathroom. So I went to get him and he was still laying on the pillow. He went to the bathroom and then requested to go back to his nap on the pillow. I covered him up again and left him in his room. 25 minutes after that he was calling out to go to the bathroom again. I went in and he was still on the pillow. He went back in his room after the bathroom break and stayed in there for about 75 minutes total. Towards the end, I could hear that he was playing with toys. Today was the same sort of story, except he wanted to nap on his car mat. But once again he stayed in his room for a little over an hour. I bet he would have stayed longer, but we needed to go run some errands. I actually thought he might have been asleep because I could only hear breathing, no evidence of toys and no talking, but when I opened his door he was awake and showed me the Lego igloo he had been working on. Bedtimes in the crib are still no problem, to our knowledge he hasn't tried to escape, but soon we'll take off the side of his crib to convert it to a toddler bed and begin the search for a real bed for him.

I guess he's been watching too much Bob the Builder...

Yesterday Skyler was running around in circles around one of his toys. When he stopped, I asked him if he was dizzy. "No, I'm Rolley, " he said.

Reality Check

Most of the things I write about on here show Skyler's cute and sweet side. Therefore, if you have no experience whatsoever with young children (or you are his grandma) you may think he is completely sweet and adorable all of the time. Not so. Skyler has always needed much attention from his mom, and lately he's brought that to a new level. It's like he must always have me within two feet of him. We have good days - he'll give me some space if I pop in a video- and bad days - he must maintain physical contact with me at all times- and of course everything in between. It's not all bad, right now he's sitting on my lap putting together a puzzle/knocking everything off the computer desk. But he's really into climbing all over me lately. Which involves lots of involuntary kicking, hitting, and pinching of places I'd just rather he stay away from. And making dinner is fun when he thinks since he needs to hang on me anyway, he might as well help in every way possible. He's so 'helpful' now that sometimes it's just better I leave chores undone. For example, I think I've written about how he helps me clean the bathroom with his squirt bottle of water and a rag. Well lately he's decided that the toilet makes a better water source. So um, no more cleaning the bathroom with Skyler around.

Snow
December 31, 2006

Skyler still does not like snow. He'll go outside, but he won't step in it or walk in it or touch it. Jordan built an igloo yesterday and we did get Skyler to go inside of it. I had to carry him over to it though, because heaven forbid he walk on the snow.

But today, we had a breakthrough, he went into the igloo with Jordan and walked over to it all by himself! He would stand up in it after he got out though and Jordan kind of had to push him so that he could climb out and then pick Skyler up to carry him to the patio.

Gingerbread House and Tamales

We did a lot of stuff in the kitchen last weekend and Skyler loved to help. Skyler helped me bake the gingerbread on Thursday and we decorated the house on Sunday. On Monday we made tamales, and Skyler was a much more eager helper than we anticipated. He was pretty good at it too! I think the pictures do a good job of telling the story.

Santa in the Flesh

This week Skyler got to meet Santa. He stood in front of him and shook his hand and just stared. Santa talked to him and Skyler repeated him . It was strange to see this kid so at a loss for words. He didn't even ask for tracks!

Santa

Skyler has learned about Santa. The other day he was playing trains with Jordan. He asked Jordan to go upstairs and get more tracks. Jordan said we didn't have anymore, but that he could ask Santa to bring him more tracks for Christmas. Oh my, that sure stayed in his head. He even interjects it into our family prayers and when we bless the food, no matter whose turn it is. He says, "thank you for Santa bring more tracks for Skyler". I sure hope Heavenly Father passes the message onto Santa.

B-I-N-G-O

Skyler gave us a little concert last night. BINGO was the first song and he did a great job, but I couldn't get to the camera fast enough. As you can see, BINGO was also the second song, and I got that one. The third song was something about cleaning up paint in the garage, which we had to do earlier that day. I was laughing too hard to get that one on camera.

Thanksgiving and Life in The Big House

By some act of God, we've completely moved out of our apartment. Skyler did his best to keep me from packing on moving day, but luckily I got enough packed that we were able to fill the moving truck. Then we scrambled to get everything in some sort of container just to get it into the house before we left for Arizona. Skyler tried his hand at packing and packed away some DVDs we had on loan from the library into his backpack. It took me over a week to find them. I was afraid they were packed away in a box because he had tried more than once to put them in. He also really likes helping to unpack too. Skyler loves the stairs but if I'm anywhere near him he screams at me to "hol'jem up the stairs". Walk up yourself kid. He's been sick and therefore whiny (which didn't make my list of things to do pre and post move any easier) and when he's sick he has little patience for anything, which is quite the coincidence seeing as when he's sick I have little patience for him, but he's cute and I love him, so I'll keep him.

We spent Thanksgiving in Arizona (Skyler and I are still here). Skyler really isn't in to Thanksgiving foods and keeps asking for enchiladas. And everyone is thoroughly impressed at how well he says, "quesadilla". My sister's cat had kittens and she brought some over to my parents' house so Skyler could play with them. Oh my gosh he loves them. He chases them around, picks them up, and generally tortures them. But they apparently don't mind because there has been no scratching or biting. They just keep trying to find good hiding spots. I've had to wipe his runny nose so many times that it got so dry and so raw and started bleeding. :(. It looks a lot better now, thanks to vaseline and neosporin, but man it looked bad for a little bit. Tonight he's sleeping in the big bed. He asked and I let him. He was really tired and didn't get out of it (or if he did he got right back into where I put him). Sigh. What a big boy he is.

Long overdue update

So a little recap as to what we've been up to.
On Halloween we went to our ward's Halloween party. Skyler was so excited to go, which I thought was hilarious since he really had no idea what a Halloween party was. We bought a house, and we're moving this weekend, which means I've been busy packing. Okay really what it means is I will need to be busy packing in the next few days. Skyler is very excited to go live in the "big house" (meaning the new house, not prison)with stairs. Skyler has made a friend, his name is Gabe and he's about six months younger. Skyler adores him and constantly asks if he can come over. We also bought a second car, which Skyler keeps telling me "has wheels" which a guess is a good perk on a car that we paid as much as we did for it. The day we went to go give the money to the guy, we also stopped at the zoo. I let Skyler not be in the stroller and he loved just running around. Skyler's new favorite saying is "how's your day?" He asks me this constantly and sometimes he'll answer if I ask him. He talks so much it's unreal. Everyday before Jordan goes to work, Skyler tells him, "good bye see you guys later, good day at work!". He also always tells me that his "guys" (the little people toys and the lego people and other similar toys) are going to the grocery store and the fabric store. Sometimes he needs to put his cars down for naps. He also is really in to having me pretend to change his stuffed animals' nonexistant diapers. He is developing quite an imagination. He loves to draw and does a really nice job of it and always tells me what he's just drawn. He also likes to ask me or Jordan to draw random things for him, carrots are a popular thing. He got a haircut on Monday, his first not done by Jordan or I. He was terrified and as a result sat very still the entire time. Here is a picture.

D is for Drums

We got the They Might Be Giants DVD called Here Come the ABC's. It's basically a bunch of music videos for their songs from that CD. Skyler loves it. Here he is with daddy singing one of the songs.

Some Random Things

Sunday morning Skyler was acting weird and I asked him what was wrong. He said, "I'm freaking out".

Skyler wants absolutely nothing to do with Jordan most of the time. He won't even let him pour him a drink.

One of Skyler's new favorite things to do is take the couch cushions off and jump and climb on them.

Skyler is afraid of the vacuum again. He notified me when I tried to vacuum the other day.

Naps are still hit or miss, but he's napping now, hooray! He's been so very unpleasant to be around, he's clearly not getting enough sleep, but I can't figure out how to get that sleep in.

Skyler will be Blue (As in Blue's Clues) for Halloween. We went to get the fabric the other day (since after much searching for light blue colored clothing, I just decided to make it) and every now and then he asks for his costume on, meaning he wants me to drape the fabric around him.

It used to be incredibly annoying to live on the second floor. It still is, but slightly less so since Skyler is now very insistent that I carry him (or "Mommy hold you" as he says it). It sometimes means two trips down or up the stairs, but that's still a lot faster than the snail's pace he would always take the stairs at (and I know he can do stairs faster).

This Week

This week was a trying one for Skyler in the world of using the toilet. He went about a week and a half with no accidents, or at least very few. But this week every time I turned around he was peeing on the floor. But today I'm happy to report, when we put his pajamas on him at night, we took off the same pair of underwear that we put on him in the morning! So hopefully we are near the end of this set back. This week we went to the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta. On Wednesday morning we woke up early for the mass ascension (so Skyler was very very cranky all day). It was so awesome though. Skyler was afraid of the loud noises the burner made when we got to close, but other than that he really liked it too. Then Friday night we went back for the glow. Skyler got to see his first fireworks show and it was so neat to watch it through his eyes. On Friday at the library Skyler saw two other kids. The girl was a little younger than Skyler, I'm guessing and the boy was about 4. Skyler kept yelling to them, "kids, come on!". They were busy reading books with their mom. Then when they were at the shelf looking at books, he went right up to them and said it again. I feel bad that my social little boy has such an unsocial mother.

Cute Things
October 09, 2006

The other day I asked Skyler why he was miserable ( a common occurrence these days) and he said, "I'm cranky"

Today while out driving, Skyler fell asleep in the car. Jordan took a speed bump a little too fast and in his sleep Skyler said, "whoa".

Vacuuming

We bought a new vacuum today and it appears that Skyler is no longer afraid of them. He was scared to death when we went in the store, he made Jordan pick him up before we even got in the door (he obviously remembered where we were), but once he realized that he could vacuum, well, then what is there to be afraid of?

Sunday

Skyler stayed dry all through church! Such a relief since he peed on the floor three weeks ago. We took many trips to the bathroom during sacrament meeting, there's no question that that is what Skyler likes to do when he's bored. We are full of good impressions in this ward since Jordan said he'd teach Elder's Quorum this week and forgot.

Tennis

After Jordan got home from work, we walked over to the tennis courts to play tennis. Skyler had so much fun, he was laughing and smiling the entire time. We only almost hit him once! The secret was to aim for him, then we were sure to miss him seeing as we were a bit rusty.

Naps

Skyler is apparently taking a break from naps. He doesn't at all fight going down, he just never falls asleep. But it's been a hard week. He's cranky all morning, won't sleep, then cranky in the afternoon and things just start to get ugly around 4:30. I tried waiting longer before putting him down, but that made no difference. I'm totally okay with him being done with naps, he'll still do a rest time in his crib for the time being so that I can at least eat lunch in peace, and I'm looking forward to not planning my day around his naps anymore.

Then there's the taking off of the diaper. I'm considering lining his crib with newspaper and calling it a litter box. :)

Family Reunion

This weekend we went to Ruidoso, NM for a family reunion for Jordan's mom's side. For the most part, Skyler really enjoyed playing with his cousins. He got to take a pony ride and go fishing. He was very accident prone this weekend, he fell off the swing, the slide, a short wall, and the sidewalk.

In other news, he pooped in the toilet for the first time today, and no post nap trip to the laundry room - he not only kept his diaper on, but his pants also!
